Phoebe Porter | Worskhop
PROCESS DRIVEN JEWELLERY DESIGN WORKSHOP
Contemporary jeweller Phoebe Porter will give an overview of her work and discuss her design process, followed by a tour of her studio in small groups. Participants will then be guided through the process of designing a bracelet to be made from sheet metal, responding to specific forming techniques demonstrated during the session. Participants will have the opportunity to model their own design in cardboard at actual scale to assess its sculptural qualities and wearability.
PHOEBE PORTER
Phoebe Porter combines geometric abstraction, bold colour and unexpected asymmetry to create contemporary jewellery that resonates with influences of the Bauhaus and Russian Constructivism. Trained in gold and silver smithing, Phoebe successfully combines industrial materials and processes with precious elements using refined hand-making skills and a design language developed over more than twenty-five years of practice.
Phoebe has exhibited extensively across Australia as well as in Japan, Germany, the UK and the USA and her work has been acquired for a number of public collections, including the National Gallery of Australia and the Powerhouse Museum. Her awards include a Victorian Premier’s Design Mark and grants from the Australia Council and Arts ACT. Phoebe was nominated as the 2019 Design Canberra Festival Designer-in-Residence.
After almost a decade honing her craft in Melbourne, Phoebe moved back to her hometown of Canberra in 2014 and now works from a beautiful heritage studio at Gorman Arts Centre.
Note: this fringe event is available to holders of a CONTEXT full event ticket. Delegates should register for an additional ticket for the purpose of managing numbers. As a workshop style event, it has a ticket price of $70 to cover RAA costs.
