Exchanging Ideas in CONTEXT - Colour | Growth | Form 

20-22 March 2025.


Booking note: Full Event ticket includes Main Seminar Day on the Friday as well as a Fringe Program of optional events on the Thursday and Saturday; these are designed to offer further opportunities to engage with the local area in a fun and relaxing way.

Events with a * next to them require delegates to register for an additional ticket for the purpose of managing numbers. Most Fringe Events are free, however some cost is associated with workshop style events.

RAA EVENT WARM UP - COLOUR WORKSHOP WITH LYMESMITH

GET READY for CONTEXT in Canberra with Lymesmith’s highly regarded CPD course for Architects and Spatial Designers: FOUNDATIONS OF ARCHITECTURAL COLOUR DESIGN taking place 1-5pm on Wednesday March 19. More information here.


THURSDAY PROGRAM.

12-1.30PM THE ARBORETUM | EXPLORE & LUNCH (BUY YOUR OWN)*
RAA president Tim Lee will meet us at the entry to the Bonsai display at The National Arboretum Canberra, and lead a walk to view and discuss the growth of Canberra from a hilltop vantage point.

2-5PM PHOEBE PORTER | WORKSHOP | $70*
Contemporary jeweller Phoebe Porter will give an overview of her work and discuss her design process, followed by a tour of her studio in small groups. Participants will then be guided through the process of designing a bracelet to be made from sheet metal, responding to specific forming techniques demonstrated during the session. Note: capacity is 20 for this workshop.

2-5PM HAM DARROCH | WALKING TOUR*
Starting at the National Gallery, Canberra based artist Ham Darroch will speak about his working relationship with Bridget Riley before taking delegates to view an installation of his own work. The tour will then wrap up at Ham's studio at the Gorman Arts Centre where he will continue to expand on his projects and practice. Approximately 4km of walking is involved.

6:00-8:00PM COMMUNITY DINNER (BUY YOUR OWN)
This dinner will be at Assembly The People’s Pub. Delegates should should join the RAA booking on arrival.


FRIDAY INFO.

MAIN SEMINAR DAY
The Main Seminar Day will take place at Ainslie Arts Centre, 30 Elouera St, Braddon. Parking available at rear of building off Elder St, carpooling, walking, bike or scooter use (hire available locally) is encouraged.

9:00-9.30AM COFFEE (BUY YOUR OWN)
Enjoy your morning coffee at Bookplate Cafe at the National Library amidst Leonard French stained-glass windows. Feel free to bring your coffee to the site visit following.

9.30-10.30AM NATIONAL LIBRARY | SITE VISIT & TOUR*
Assistant Director of Capital Works, David Priddle will speak about the National Library of Australia’s ‘New Formalist’ style and the current facade restoration works.

10.30-11.00AM BIKE RIDE
RAA committee will lead a bike ride between the National Library and Dairy road precinct through the Jerrabomberra wetlands. Information about hiring a bike in Canberra here.

11AM-12.30PM DAIRY RD PRECINCT | SITE VISIT & TOUR*
Molonglo Director Nikos Kalogeropoulos will speak about the current and future development of the Dairy Road Precinct, with an opportunity for exploration.

12.30PM SOCIAL LUNCH (BUY YOUR OWN)
This lunch will be at the Capital Brewing, Building 3, 1 Dairy Rd, Fyshwick.
