LIGHT - the essence of architecture, theme abstract

Back to Event Overview

“In making for ourselves a place to live, we first spread a parasol to throw a shadow on the earth, and in the pale light of the shadow we put together a house.” – Jun'ichirō Tanizaki, In Praise of Shadows, 1933.

Bark Architects founders Lindy Atkin and Steve Guthrie are delighted to welcome delegates to be inspired by ‘Light’ as the inaugural Queensland event to be presented by the Regional Architecture Association in the 2023 calendar, taking place from 20-22 July in Noosa.

As regional ‘local’ architects, celebrating 25 years of practice in Noosa, Bark will be hosting ‘Light’ on Gubbi Gubbi / Kabi Kabi Country in their recently completed adaptive reuse project, the ‘Art Room’, which shares the site of their Noosa hinterland Studio, overlooking the Noosa coastline.

“Noothera, the indigenous word for Noosa, means ‘shadow’ or ‘place of shade’, evoking images of dancing, dappled light and shade amongst pandanus, paperbarks, banksias and whispering she-oaks along a meandering coastal path.” - Lindy Atkin.

As a bespoke and experiential event with limited ticket capacity, Light will impart personal perspectives of eight inspiring practitioners working in the regions, who will tell of the allure of creating lightness in the making of evocative places. The inspiring play of light within expressive spaces, the lightness on the land and the sea’s resources creates lighter footprints on Country, which sit lightly in the landscape and works with the lightness and agility of regional practice.

“The spirit of Sunshine Coast architecture to us could be expressed as possessing two critical ingredients, landscape and light, and how these essentials are employed to evoke the dappled light and shadow in our subtropical sunshine coast places, so using this lens of ‘Light’ as the essence of architecture, our speakers will connect, share and celebrate making regional projects that revere climate, landscape and place in Noosa and the broader Sunshine Coast region.” - Steve Guthrie.

“In our fast-paced, technologically advanced but increasingly disenchanted society, as we focus on the sustainability, resilience and regenerative design of our built environment to deal with climate change, are transcendent experiences in architectural spaces still possible to create?” - Steve Guthrie.

“Light – the essence of architecture will aim to explore answers to this question and to summon the promise of a sensual and evocative architecture, one that nurtures and appeals to memory in the places that we inhabit; this holds meaningful significance now, more than ever, in our rapidly changing world.”- Lindy Atkin.

Inspiring architecture talks will be buoyed by yoga, art, music, culture, food and exploring Sunshine Coast houses as exciting and memorable fringe events.
