I will be flying to the event - what do I need to know and when should I book?
Mparntwe (Alice Springs) has direct flights from major Australian cities. Typically, there are daily or near-daily flights from the capitals. Cheap flights are often available to Uluru/Yulara, which is 5 hours by car from Mparntwe (Alice Springs). Easy transport is available from Mparntwe (Alice Springs) airport to the city centre (15 min drive) via shuttle or taxi.

It’s best to book flights as early as possible, ideally 3–6 months in advance. September is peak season in Mparntwe (Alice Springs) due to the pleasant Spring weather and various events, so flights can fill up quickly, and prices may increase closer to the date. There are often flight sales so set up alerts via the “Watch Fare” feature from Qantas.

Please note that this event will take up all of 11th, 12th and 13th September. We suggest flights are booked before and after these dates so you don’t miss out on any aspect of the program.

How do I get around during the event?
Mparntwe (Alice Springs) has a compact and walkable city centre. Transport will be arranged for any conference events that are outside the city centre, such as the visit to the West MacDonnell Ranges. Taxis are available if your accomodation is not within walking distance to the venue. A car is recommended if you plan to explore beyond the event venues, visit nearby attractions, or travel around the region.

Can I hire a bicycle?
Yes! Mparntwe (Alice Springs) is quite flat and comfortable to ride around. You can hire bikes from a number of businesses around Mparntwe, like ‘Outback Cycling/Red Centre Adventure’ and ‘My Ride’.

How will I get to the MacDonnell Ranges?
The RAA will arrange for delegates to be transported to and from the West MacDonnell Ranges on day 3 (Saturday) of the event. We ask that delegates advise as soon as possible if they are self driving and do not require transport.

Do I need to own or hire a 4WD if self driving?
A 4WD is not essential for most of the major attractions around Mparntwe (Alice Springs), including the West MacDonnell ranges. However, if you’re planning to visit more remote locations, such as Palm or Rainbow Valley, a 4WD may be needed due to the many unsealed roads. Note that most car hire companies restrict access for 2WD vehicles on all dirt roads, and driving after dusk and before dawn outside the town limits for all vehicles including 4WD’s. Please check rental conditions prior hire.

Where is the conference venue?
The event will be held at the John Flynn Memorial Uniting Church in the centre of Mparntwe (Alice Springs) on Todd Street Mall. Activities will take us around the town with transport provided where necessary.

Can you advise on accommodation options?
Mparntwe (Alice Springs) offers a wide range of accommodations, including hotels, motels and caravan parks with cabins and campsites. While we suggest you undertake your own research, we have compiled a list of possible venues for attendees here. The event WhatsApp group may be used to coordinate delegate groups if you prefer to stay at the same venue as other attendees or would like to share accommodation.

Can I camp?
Camping can be a great way to experience the natural beauty of Central Australia, but ensure you bring proper gear. September is a beautiful time of year, but can be both hot during the day (avg. 28 deg) and cold at night (avg. 10 deg), however it can get significantly colder or hotter than these averages, so pack for both heat and cold. If you're traveling light, some campgrounds rent out basic equipment or there are several hire options available like, Nomadic Camping or Alice Car Rental.

Should I be concerned about safety in Mparntwe (Alice Springs) and its surrounds?
Mparntwe (Alice Springs) is a welcoming and vibrant community with unique cultural and natural attractions and extensive tourist insfrastructure. The creative directors live and work in the town and enjoy its diverse environment and population. The surrounding landscape offers spectacular experiences.

Visitors should exercise awareness and take some precautions when moving about town and when travelling to remote locations.
Here’s what you should know:

1. General Safety Tips

  • Be mindful after dark: While the town is generally safe, it is advisable to avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas, especially at night. Walk in groups if possible and avoid walking long distances to accommodation.

  • Stay in well-frequented areas: Stick to main streets, public spaces, and tourist hubs where there are typically more people.

  • Keep belongings secure: As with any travel destination, keep valuables like wallets, phones, and passports secure and out of sight when not in use.

  • Humbug: Humbug is when people pester you for something, eg money, buying art, food and grog etc. This is common in Mparntwe (Alice Springs) but a polite and simple “Not today sorry” is typically enough. If you are pestered to buy art, remember ‘Desert Mob’ is also on at the time. If you want to purchase local art, this event offers ethically sourced objects and ensures artists are paid fairly.

2. Alcohol and Anti-Social Behavior

Mparntwe (Alice Springs), like other regions, experiences some challenges related to alcohol consumption. To ensure your safety:

  • Be cautious around alcohol-restricted areas: Some areas in and around Mparntwe (Alice Springs) have alcohol bans or restrictions. Always respect local laws and regulations. Bottle shops only open Wednesday to Sunday with limited hours.

  • Stay alert in public spaces: Occasional anti-social behavior can occur in certain parts of town, so it’s best to stay aware of your surroundings.

3. Accommodation Safety

  • Choose reputable accommodation: Most hotels, hostels, and resorts in Mparntwe (Alice Springs) prioritize guest safety, with secure facilities and helpful staff. Opt for places with good reviews and strong safety measures.

  • Lock doors and windows: Ensure your accommodation is secure, particularly if you’re staying in ground-level rooms.

4. Outdoor Safety

Mparntwe (Alice Springs) is surrounded by incredible natural landscapes, but it’s essential to stay prepared:

  • Plan your trips carefully: If you’re hiking or exploring, let someone know your plans and expected return time.

  • Stay hydrated: The desert environment can be harsh, so carry plenty of water and sun protection.

  • Watch the wildlife: While rare, encounters with snakes or other wildlife are possible. Stick to marked trails and follow local advice.

5. Cultural Respect

Mparntwe (Alice Springs) is home to a large Indigenous population, and respecting the local culture is essential:

  • Follow community guidelines: Some areas, including sacred sites, may have restrictions. Always ask for permission or follow posted signs.

  • Engage respectfully: Learning about and respecting local customs and traditions contributes to a positive experience.

  • Yelling: Often you will hear what may appear to be aggressive yelling in the street. This does not always mean someone is angry but is likely to be friendly communicating with a friend down the street. Aboriginal people have incredible projection! Enjoy!
