RAA Committee Profile

EMILY KNIGHT
Events

Emily Knight of Sydney based Emily Knight Design has been a RAA committee member since November 2023, having been inspired to give back to an organisation that made her feel very welcome and whose events she particularly enjoyed attending. It follows that Emily’s biggest achievement in her time on the committee has been her contribution to the planning and smooth running of in person events. It has been extremely rewarding for her given the events are so well received.

Emily has also benefited from simply being involved and part of the conversation, especially around the RAA response to the Building Bill, which she says has represented her biggest leap of understanding when it comes to legislation. She places high value on what she has learnt from fellow committee members, acknowledging the fantastic, incredibly qualified brains trust to draw on when things go sideways.

Emily sees a difference in the way metro or regional architects engage with community; she says “it serves regional communities better to allow regional architectural practices to engage in activity across the gamut of architectural activity within the community they are a part of. Rules of engagement and community accountability are different and this should be acknowledged and advocated for.”

We can certainly guarantee engaging conversations and a strong sense of community, but for Emily her committee involvement has gone a step further; she notes the most memorable aspect of as her engagement to fellow committee member Marcus Piper - they first met at a country division event, but only got together after being on the RAA committee -  we certainly wish the (very) happy couple all the best.

Emily encourages all members to think of WHENthey can get involved; she says “the benefits in events, advocacy and visibility are only able to continue and expand with a rolling engagement of new committee members (in 2-5 year terms) relieving and passing on information through the group. We’re also a fun, quirky bunch to hang out with fortnightly on a Tuesday afternoon.”

There will be committee positions open at the upcoming AGM in September. RAA members are invited to express their interest in joining by contacting Rhiannon on info@regionalarchitecture.net.au
