RAA Annual Conference 2022 | Northern Rivers
Join us for three days of important conversations, site visits, forum discussions and Social Gatherings.
This event, centred around the question ‘Our Place In Community?’, was born following a series of online events facilitated by the RAA in response to the recent floods in the Northern Rivers region. These discussions revealed the negative impact of disconnected decision-making processes between different authorities, the lack of prior planning and a lack of engagement with affected communities on the recovery process. These issues also highlight an ongoing challenge for regional communities as other factors such as the pandemic and changing work environments drive a population shift into regional areas.
The annual RAA conference offers a learning opportunity as we hear from our guest speakers and panel members about appropriate responses at a community and planning level. The event will consider perspectives from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds relevant to the architectural community.
Day 1 focuses on experience, day 2 on community, and day 3 on listening and learning. All events are tied together by the central question interrogating the role of the architect as problem solvers utilising our ability to listen and learn within community recovery and meaningful placemaking. In addition, we seek your feedback on current and future RAA projects as we enter the second year of operations for the association.
The event commences with a series of site visits to exemplar regional projects in the Northern Rivers guided by the respective architects Harley Graham and Dominic Finlay Jones including Habitat Byron Bay followed by lunch, brewery tour and tasting at Stone & Wood.
This is followed by presentations from filmmaker Nikolas Strugar from Ravens At Odds with Aspect Architecture’s Matt Cooper to recognise the launch of the RAA Aperture - Regional Architecture: In Focus program and its’ first production on the Kingscliff Community Centre. Peter Dunn, AO will join us to share his perspective and experience as former ACT Emergency Services Authority Commissioner and member of Emergency Leaders for Climate Action. The day continues with a community event, an exclusive screening of Regenerating Australia and a celebration of a successful first year of the RAA.
We then focus on Community, Consultants and Collaborators.
Speakers and panel members include: James Davidson (JDA Co), Dr Esther Charlesworth (Architects without Frontiers, RMIT), Peter Dunn (Emergency Leaders for Climate Action), Phillip Nielson (Regional Design Service), Nikolas Strugar (Ravens At Odds), Cooper (Aspect Architecture), Rory Toomey (NSW Government Architects’ Office), Damian Chapelle (Newton Denny Chapelle), Josh Neale (Westera Partners), Rebecca Whan (Patternshop).
